We would like to inform you about a development within ISO management system standards. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has decided to add the climate change component to management system standards.
Climate change amendment
ISO adds the new provisions to a number of existing management system standards. In the following document you will find an overview to which management system standards the amendment applies: Climate Action amendments.
Under sections 4.1 and 4.2, text related to climate change has been added, for example in ISO 27001 and ISO 9001. It is important to consider the effects of climate change on the ability of a management system to achieve its intended results.
The added provisions are as follows:
4.1
The organization shall determine whether climate change is a relevant topic.
4.2
NOTE: relevant interested parties can have requirements related to climate change.
Integrating climate into management systems
These additional statements ensure that the topic of climate change is not overlooked. In this way, it is considered in the design and implementation of the management system. The overall intent of the requirements for clauses 4.1 and 4.2 remains unchanged. These clauses already include the need to consider all internal and external issues that can impact the effectiveness of the management system. These new inclusions assure that climate change is an external factor that is important enough to consider.
What does it mean?
Below we list what the change actually means with regard to you certification:
- It is important to have insight in the effect that climate change has on your management system.
- It is important to determine whether your stakeholders have any requirements related to the topic of climate change.
- Once you have identified climate change impacts and requirements, you should consider these when identifying your risks and opportunities for your management system.
Audit
During the next audit, our auditor determines whether you have implemented the amended standard requirements in your management system.
